therblig a year agoYears ago (high school) I had the notion that I wanted to work in advertising - my “talent” for zingy one-liners seemed a perfect fit. As it turned out, my step-father’s brother-in-law owned a fairly large agency and he arranged for me to spend a day there, meeting with various employees. It was a real eye-opener. All the creative folks (artists, copywriters, art directors) seemed to really hate their lives. The only person who was genuinely enthusiastic was an account executive who went on about putting together and negotiating a deal. It turned my impression of the advertising world on its head. I still considered it for a couple more years - by then, the agency had gone under.
