2. Francis Ford Coppola is Han Solo
George Lucas has said that Han Solo is based on his directing contemporary, Francis Ford Coppola. We’re pretty sure that if Coppola had directed, Han would have shot first.
3. They make wine!
The Coppola family owns a winery in California which they bought using proceeds from the first “Godfather” movie. Wine was originally produced under the Niebaum-Coppola label, but has since been renamed Inglenook.
4. Rocky married a Coppola
Born Talia Rose Coppola, Talia Shire is the sister of Francis Ford Coppola and played Rocky’s on-screen love interest Adrianna Pennino Balboa.
5. They make for a rather evil ex
Jason Schwartzman played Gideon Gordon Graves, one of Ramona’s evil exes in “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” In reality Schwartzman is the son of Talia Shire, thus making him Francis’ nephew.
6. One of them is from Naboo
Sofia Coppola, Francis’ daughter, had a cameo in Star Wars: Episode I as Saché, one of Queen Amidala’s handmaidens.
7. Nicolas Cage is one
Nicolas Kim Coppola took on the last name Cage early on in his acting career to avoid the appearance of nepotism due to his famous director uncle, Francis Ford Coppola.
8. Sofia made history
Sofia Coppola was the first American woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director for “Lost In Translation.”
9. They don’t just direct movies
Roman Coppola, Francis’ son, has directed music videos for a number of bands, including this one for Green Day.
10. They’ve made out with royalty
Robert Coppola Schwartzman played Michael Moscovitz, the love interest of Princess Mia (Anne Hathaway), in “The Princess Diaries.”
11. Oscars run in the family
Nicolas Cage, Sofia Coppola and Francis Ford Coppola have all won Oscars. Francis’ father, Carmine, has one too, making the Coppolas one of only two families to have Oscar winners across three generations.
