Have you ever wondered how great and awesome it would be to live in outer space? Well, sure, it would be cool. But just like how every city had a crappy part, the universe has ugly parts as well. Listed below are the 10 most bone-chilling to metal-melting to the most unstable places in the universe! Enjoy!

1. WASP-12b

Gas giant “WASP-12b” is certainly not the best place to be. The planet shouldn’t even exist says some astronomers! The planet is so close to WASP-12 (WASP-12b’s parent star) that the star’s tidal forces are distorting the planet into an egg shape and striping it’s atmosphere away at a rate of about 189 quadrillion tons per year! This planet is one of the hottest planets that humans have EVER discovered! Its temperature ranges from 3,800-4,100 degrees (You could bake a pizza in less than 7 seconds!)! The reason why WASP-12b is a head-scratcher to scientists is because it’s a gas planet, gas planets typically form 100’s of millions of miles away from it’s parent star. Astonishingly, WASP-12b is wayyyy larger than Jupiter and lies only a little over 2 million miles away! That’s closer than Mercury is to our sun! How did this beast of a planet get there?

2. The Boomerang Nebula (The Bow Tie Nebula)

The Boomerang Nebula is a protoplanetary nebula located 5,000 light-years away from Earth in the constellation Centaurus! It is also known as the Bow Tie Nebula. The nebula’s temperature is measured at −457.87 °F making it the coldest natural place currently known in the Universe. -459 °F degrees is the coldest anything can get according to scientists. It’s where the atoms aren’t moving at all to conduct any heat; Here at the Boomerang nebula, atoms are moving slower than any rush-hour traffic ever seen here on Earth (Not literally).

3. COROT-7b

When it rains on COROT-7b, it rains lava… ‘Nuff said? Well, it gets worse: COROT-7b, which is 489 light-years from Earth and about 1.5 times our size, is estimated to be around 4,500 degrees F! The exoplanet is so close to its star that its year lasts only 20 hours on Earth (That’s less than a day on Earth!) and its surface is probably a welcoming mixture of volcanoes, lava, rocks, and suffocating gasses. Okay, ‘nuff said!

4. Kepler-10b

If you spent the night on Kepler-10b (560 light-years away), you’d wake up a year older! After an Earth year (365 days) you would be more than 360 years old if you stayed on Kepler-10b that long! That’s because the 2,800-degree F planet orbits its star every 20 hours. This rocky super-Earth (so called because it’s about 1.4 times the size of Earth and nearly five times as dense) is thought to have a surface of molten lava hot enough to melt iron!

5. HD 189773b

HD 189773b, 63 light-years away, looks nice, peaceful, calm, and some-what Earthlike. But it’s not. It’s about 1,800 degrees on its surface and it rains glass. Yes, I said glass. And no, the blue is not an ocean, the blue color is thought to come from silicate particles in the planet’s atmosphere, which scatter blue light. Because of the planet’s surface temperature, the particles could condense to form glass! These glass grains would then fly and zip around in the planet’s 4,000-mph wind. Ouch.
