Not actually a state fair, but for those who have little taste for carnival rides or deep-fried candy bars, the Common Ground fair, run by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, is a healthy alternative built on the notion of promoting locally grown, organic foods. There are no rides, but there is dancing, singing, livestock demonstrations, presentations on composting and recycling, and a vegetable garden parade in which children dress up as veggies.
