I'm in the middle of reading Jane Goodall's book “In the Shadow of Man,” and there is no doubt in my mind that chimps experience grief and loss. I really recommend the book.
This photo first appeared in the November issue of National Geographic magazine. The photographer, who worked as a volunteer at the chimp rescue center, submitted her photo to National Geographic's Your Shot, which features readers' best pix. Here's the backstory:

Aw, that's so sad. On that “Chimp Sanctuary” or whatever it was called series, one of the chimps had died and a relative of her's (son I think) stuck by her body and wouldn't let the sanctuary workers take her away. Obviously the .1% difference between us and them isn't emotion…
Proof that we are all just animals.
