Wish You Could Take A Beautiful Selfie? Here's How

See your real beauty in a selfie through the qualities you express

Do you like to take selfies? I do. Taking a quick selfie captures a moment or feeling beautifully so I can remember it.

Later I've looked at my photos and thought, "ugh, that's not a good angle for me" or "my face looked so puffy that day." I leapt into judging myself - often harshly.

While it's tempting to download and put to use a handful of photo-enhancing apps before uploading my photos to facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, instead I pause to wonder … is there a better way to feel beautiful? Not just in my photos, but in every moment?

How about taking a spiritual selfie?

What the heck is that? Not a photo of a ghost . . .

It's considering my spiritual self, taking account of which qualities I express - goodness, patience, strength, and so on. A spiritual selfie doesn't need a filter or photoshop- it's always beautiful, because each person expresses good qualities.

This concept comes from Mary Baker Eddy, who wrote, "man is the offspring of Spirit. The beautiful, good, and pure constitute his ancestry . . ." She was a spiritual visionary who pioneered ideas about mankind's spiritual nature in her seminal work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.

Have you ever thought of yourself as spiritual offspring? It weeds out petty concerns like whether or not you have a thigh gap and if your face is symmetrical.

To be healthier and happier, I pause for a moment each day to take a spiritual selfie - in other words, to pray. I notice which good qualities I'm expressing and which ones I should focus on cultivating more. Just this afternoon, I noticed that I was being inclusive of everyone at a party, but that I could work on listening more instead of talking so much. Thankfully, since the beauty, goodness, and purity make up my ancestry, I can do it.

When you take a selfie, consider making it a spiritual one every now and then. Reflect on your spiritual nature and consider the good qualities you express. I guarantee it will make you feel healthier, happier, and closer to God.
