With their pick, the Edmonton Oilers selected Connor McDavid in the 2015 National Hockey League Entry Draft, which was held at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida. The BB&T Center is the home of the NHL’s Florida Panthers who acted as hosts. This annual draft rotates year to year in the various venues and arenas from the NHL’s franchises. The top five selections of this year’s draft were Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel, Dylan Strome, Mitchell Marner, and Noah Hanifin by the Edmonton Oilers, Buffalo Sabres, Arizona Coyotes, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Carolina Hurricanes, respectively.

The order of selection in the draft is determined by a number of factors. Through the use of a lottery, the final regular season standing, and playoff results the NHL’s franchises are ordered. Teams that did not qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs are entered in a weighted lottery. The winning team is awarded the first pick in the draft and no team can drop more than one place according to the final regular season standings. The remaining order is determined by the Stanley Cup playoff results. The Stanley Cup winner receives the final pick of the draft order while the runner up picks second to last.

Those players eligible for selection for the 2015 National Hockey League Entry Draft needed to have been born between January 1, 1995 and September 15, 1997. In addition, undrafted, non-North American players born in 1994 are eligible for selection in the 2015 draft. Players drafted in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, but who were not signed to a contract by an NHL franchise and who were born after June 30, 1995 are also eligible to re-enter the draft.
