Five Cool Things About Octopuses

And yes, octopuses is correct. So is octopi. Anyway, there are lots of cool things about them. Here are just a few.

They're really smart

For an animal related to brainless mollusks like clams, they are surprisingly clever. They can solve problems, unlock boxes and even thwart efforts to keep them in their tank. One octopus at the New England Aquarium got out of its tank one night, walked across a hallway and helped itself to fish in another tank.

The only hard part of an octopus's bodies is its beak. This means they can squeeze their whole selves through any hole that's the size of their beak. Exhibit A: Truman stuffed himself into a plexiglass box (rather than unlocking it) to retrieve a crab.

This Turtle Is Crying Because He's Happy

This enormous (and yet, underweight) leatherback sea turtle got stranded in the right place at the right time. Rescued by IFAW and Mass. Audubon, rehabbed and released by the New England Aquarium, he’s now on the move with a new lease on life. This could be only the third time in history for a successful leatherback sea turtle rescue and release! Here’s how it went down:

Dog walkers spotted the turtle in a marshy, muddy area on outer Cape Cod. Because of the tides, the turtle rescue teams at Mass. Audubon and IFAW had to wait until the next morning to rescue the 655-lb turtle.

The big guy was transported to the New England Aquarium's Animal Care Center so the Rescue Team could rehabilitate the turtle, pump it full of medicine and other good stuff. The turtle was about 200-lbs underweight!

Source: New England Aquarium / via: rescue.neaq.org

The rescuers took blood samples and began treatment right away. They worked in near silence so as not to stress the animal out.

After a couple days, the turtle was well enough to be released back into the ocean. So with the help of a forklift and a couple dozen rescuers, they hefted the turtle onto a lobster boat and headed a couple miles out to sea. NOTE: Check out the satellite tag on his back!

Seven endangered sea turtles released back into ocean

Ready, set...

The endangered turtles were released on Long Island after 10 months of rehab at the New England Aquarium.

...Go!

These turtles are all superheroes (and villains)! Seriously, their names are Gambit, Dazzler, Zan, Venom, Robin, Thor, and Daredevil.

Almost there

A rare seal pup was recently born at the New England Aquarium. It’s pretty cute, just thought you might want to see the lil’ guy (or girl, don’t know yet).

Sharks!!

What summertime holiday would be complete without pictures of sharks? For your enjoyment, five gorgeous specimens from the Phoenix Islands. (That’s a string of coral atoll in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.) Let it be noted that these sharks, while curious, left the divers entirely alone!

The most common sharks way out in the Phoenix Islands are grey reef, white tip and black tip reefs sharks, which are fairly typically found on healthy coral reefs.

Healthy shark populations = Happy researchers

Awww, baby sharks!

"These animals are just spectacular to see in the water – the way they move so quickly under the water and how finely atuned they are to injured fish. If they spot an injured fish within second a number of sharks can race out of the depths and within seconds the fish is gone!" PIPA Blog
