People Are Tweeting Their Thoughts About The Fact That #OscarsSoWhite

The Academy Award nominations are out and they're predominately white this year. Now, this hashtag is leading to funny and thoughtful commentary.

The Oscar nominations were announced on Thursday morning and they haven't been so white since 1998. As a result, many are turning to Twitter to speak out about the lack of people of color among the nominees using the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite.

For starters, there's this photo circulating of all the Best Actor and Best Actress nominees.

And others are pointing out that people of color only get nominated when they play certain roles.

"@MrPooni: #OscarsSoWhite they haven't shifted their selection process in 87 years #OscarNoms "

#OscarsSoWhite the only time a Black person is nominated, let alone wins, is if they're in a role as a slave or the help.

Many have mentioned the fact that the lack of POC among the nominees speaks to recent current events.

#OscarsSoWhite they prefaced each nomination with, "I'm not racist, but..."

#OscarsSoWhite they wear "I CAN Breathe" t-shirts.

#OscarsSoWhite we'll see a lot of "Je Suis Charlie" buttons on the red carpet, but no #BlackLivesMatter

And some have suggested that Academy voters missed the entire point of Selma, the only film with a diverse cast that even got nominated.

#OscarsSoWhite It felt like LBJ was the real hero of Selma.

I'm surprised James Reeb, the white minister in #Selma, wasn't nominated as best supporting actor. #OscarsSoWhite

#OscarsSoWhite, it posts wistful Facebook statuses about wishing it lived in the 1950's without realizing it's basically there already.

But as funny as some of the #OscarsSoWhite tweets are, they're reminders of an issue that's really no laughing matter.

#OscarsSoWhite may be funny, but all jokes aside, this is the reality POC entertainment lives in. It's not all jokes.
