The Feminist Taylor Swift Twitter Account Is Hilarious

Meet your new favorite Taylor Swift–feminist rhetoric mashup Twitter @FeministTSwift and the woman behind it. posted on

1. There’s a new Twitter account that empowers Taylor Swift’s somewhat questionable lyrics and it’s pretty much the greatest thing ever.

She wears high heels / I wear sneakers / We're each expressing our gender identities in ways that make us feel comfortable / Date me

"I fell in love with a careless man's careful daughter / She is the best thing that's ever been mine" / Hold on, why am I a man's property?

It's a love story / Baby just say yes / because consent should always be freely and enthusiastically given

Abigail gave her virginity to a boy who changed his mind / but virginity wasn't all she had to offer / she had been duped by the patriarchy

I'm not a princess / This ain't a fairytale / I'm writing my own story / With a strong female hero

6. The account was created two days ago and already has 7,000 followers, having gained 2,000 followers in the last six hours.

The stakes are high / The water's rough / But these reproductive choices are ours.

You say you've never met one girl who / reads as many Judith Butler essays as you / But I do

You pull my chair out and help me in / & You don't know how nice that is / But it also reinforces the idea that women are inherently fragile

I talked to your parents / because i know family is important to you / as is your sexual autonomy / go pick out a white dress

12. Twitter users are already joining in on the fun.

@feministtswift I don't know about you / but I'm feeling twenty-two / cents underpaid per dollar

.@feministtswift But you carry my groceries and now I'm less than amused/Instead of laughing, let's talk about the harm in benevolent sexism

@feministtswift don't be afraid, we'll make it out of this mess / it's a love story / SCOTUS just say yes

@feministtswift Marry me, Juliet/ you'll never have to be alone/ unless you want to be/ because aloneness isn't an inherently bad thing

16. @FeministTSwift is the creation of Clara Beyer, a rising senior at Brown University who runs That Girl Magazine, a college blog devoted to “carefully walking the line between fucking the patriarchy and recommending an awesome new lipstain.”

17. In an email to BuzzFeed, Beyer says she thought of the idea Tuesday and set up the account when a friend called her 20 minutes after seeing her tweet and said, “This needs to actually happen.”

18. “I consider myself a feminist, and I blog about that kind of thing all the time, but I also LOVE Taylor Swift,” Beyer says. “Being a feminist Taylor Swift fan isn’t always easy, but it led to @FeministTSwift, so I’m not really complaining.”

19. “My fantasy is that this Twitter account gets so many followers that she tweets at us.”
