A new law in Quebec would severely limit the legality of non-violent protests. Naturally, there’s a protest. In Montreal, people meet in the street every night at 8pm with pots and pans, making all the noise they can.

You have to be there to get it I think. I’m not a student anymore but the government has treated the situation poorly and compromised all of our rights. The police has repeatedly used violence to disperse calm protests and pacific displays of civil disobedience. It’s bigger now than a student crisis. Of course there are many things in the world that are worst than that, but I’m still proud of people’s solidarity in this matter. -

Oh please. Perhaps you should post some background on what these “protests” are about (steady tuition hikes after more than a decade of little or no increases), how long they’ve been going on before any action was taken by the government (three months!), and how much they’ve cost the city in damages and lost tourism (millions). This isn’t a protest - it’s a prolonged temper tantrum.

@jmac I’m a stupid American who’s been working in Montreal since before the protests started. You’re a fucking retard if you think that the protests are out of control. theirs been like 5 riots with less the 20 people involved. while I’ve seen at least 100 peaceful protests with well over 20,000 people.

Mary A. 11 months agothe protests are about tuition hikes, not protester rights. i went up for class advising in april and the protesters refused to let students through the tunnels at concordia to write their exams. riot police had to show up. their putting these laws in place so that the protesters cant bother the students who want to finish school.

The soul of a NATION (recognized by Ottawa) is at stake. People are going out and getting together and doing something about a very corrupt governement. First world problem? Maybe. But this is how we’ve come this far (resisting assimilation and all that): by sticking together and finding creative solutions to our problems. Vive le Québec, ‘stie!

Instead of you stupid Americans commenting on a subject you obviously don’t know the details on, just shut up. The protests in Montreal are out of control and as usual have been hijacked by anarchist nutjobs. The government’s emergency bill doesn’t limit anything, it just says protestors need to alert police before they assemble. That way police can be there in enough force to stop shop windows being smashed and students being attacked for daring to attend class.
