It is well noted that most users, once presented with Google Street view can only think of using it's impressive capabilities to find their house/street/well known area. MapCrunch solves this by placing the user in a random area of Google street view and allowing them to explore the world from the comfort of their home.
A game originating on tumblr takes this a step further, in a post which at last check holds over 40,000 notes suggests playing a game:
"To play this game, go to MapCrunch, select “hide location”, make sure you have all countries unselected, and click go. What this will do is drop you in a random part of the world. It’s as if you woke up on the side of a road in an unfamiliar country. The goal of the game is to find your way to an airport so you can return home.
Bonus Hard Mode: No using outside sources, and that includes using google maps to figure out your location from signs or landmarks"
MapCrunch has as a result been surging all day, leading to sever overloads as the sites traffic increased from its normal 2,000 visitors a day to around 70,000 about 9 hours ago.
