Modern readers who think classics are “boring” just don’t want to put in the intellectual energy. They want everything spoon-fed to them, instant gratification, like watching TV sitcoms. Everything has to be explained, there has to be gunfire or explosions on every other page, and the story needs to be neatly wrapped up at the end. These books are classics because they examine the nature of humanity, of the human heart and soul, and the mysteries of existence. Some people think that’s too much work. Let them read Dan Brown.Iwouldn’t touch him witha20-foot pole. And yes, I’maliterary snob. But remember that many of these were popular books in their own day. Those readers knew how to read them. They didn’t have everything thrown at them electronically.
