The UK did have Brown’s stimulus program in effect throughout 2009 which accounts for the turnaround and growth up until austerity measures went into effect. Also, the US technically did pivot to a focus on austerity when the GOP won the House, however the resulting spending cuts were mostly prospective and were coupled with immediate additional stimulus from the payroll tax cuts.
