10 Things That Happened In 1976... the Same Year Our Main Chemical Law Was Passed

Since 1976, we've advanced technology, changed taste in movies, watched stars rise and fall, and seen changes in democracy. Yet we've only had one insufficient law regulating chemicals. This year, the Toxic Chemical Substances Act celebrates its 37th birthday. http://www.edf.org/health/chemicals

    1. There was literally only one Apple computer in the whole world, and it was made of wood. Wood from actual trees.

    2. The Ramones were an actual band you could go see in concert, not just buy a t-shirt with their name.

    3. Sylvester Stallone was pretty good looking when he starred in Rocky...

...and now he looks like this.

    4. Gerald Ford was president. He was born in the year 1913. When he played football at Michigan in the year 1933 they didn’t even wear helmets.

    5. Jack Nicholson was famous for winning Oscars…

… not for sitting in the front rows of things.

    6. Barbara Walters became the first female nightly news anchor.

    7. OJ "The Juice" Simpson was a football player, actor... and apparently an action figure.

    8. The big tech reveal wasn't the new iPhone. It was VHS cassettes.

    9. Bruce Jenner was known for being a gold medal Olympian and playmate...

...not for being ex-wife to Kris Jenner, stepfather to the Kardashians, reality TV and tabloid star.

    10. Our country's only law regulating chemicals was passed. TSCA has never been reformed or updated and is the only federal law regulating chemicals in cosmetics, plastics, furniture, manufacturing, engineering and more.

This year, TSCA celebrates its 37th birthday. That is 37 years of bad chemical legislation. We've had new presidents, new music and movies and new stars, but not new chemical regulation.
