Scott W. a year agoMy biggest complaint about this scene is the writing. The whole thing is a transparent set up and another blatant attempt at stirring controversy. Honestly the writing, the directing, could have been so much better. It didn’t at all help that the father who was supposed to be holding the camera was strangely mute throughout this “touching” family memory and the mother was a god damn robot and their daughter was written as a retard. I feel like if I really wanted bad acting and getting called a faggot by 12 year olds I’d be able to actually make money by becoming a middle school drama teacher.

jrplette a year agoYeah that was a really obvious ploy for a reaction and it just doesn’t work. Even if we’d seen it in game and weren’t told ahead of time what this was I doubt it would get much more of a reaction. The minute it starts up you know somebody on camera’s gonna die. And the minute that truck shows up its just a “meh, yep…boom…aaaany second now.” it just feels like a waste of time. It does nothing to draw you in. Now, the nuke scene in MW1…damn. That was sweet. Whole mission built around this threat, and it looks like you’ll just barely make it…and then you don’t. You really don’t. And the best part was that it wasn’t like the end of Halo: Reach where you just kinda keep fighting til its over and the game tries to give you this glorious death in the face of impossible odds, which is kind of a predictable angle and kinda trite. Nope. You don’t get to shoot shit. You’re a squishy dude who just got flattened by a helicopter crashing after getting hit by a nuclear explosion. You are dying. No going down guns blazing; you can’t even friggin’ stand. The game shows you everything that sucks about being human and rubs your face in it, all the frailty even in the face of military bravado, and it works. This is more along the lands of a Roland Emmerich movie: a flimsy and insubstantial appeal to pathos through symbols to abstractly universal and stereotypical that the humanity of the situation is completely absent. “Just some kid getting blow’d up, oh well; reminds me of that time new york got wrecked…in that one movie, i forget which; it wasn’t very memorable…”

k94 a year agoThe nuke scene from the first Modern Warfare was a lot better done and more tasteful than the later MWs, at least in my opinion. It’s just a game, so there’s not really anything to get upset about. But it was better built up and more emotional, in my opinion. The second one was just murdering a bunch of defenseless clones and collections of polygons in an airport. This was just an obvious attempt at an emotional reaction due to the whole “Oh noez, it’s a fake child who was killed!” But what was the first one? The character you were playing as, falling over and stumbling as he slowly died after a nuclear detonation. The mushroom cloud rises in the distance as buildings collapse around you. Your character continues to pick himself up several times to slowly stumble in a random direction, no hope to be seen in any direction, only to fall and collapse. In the end, the character stops moving, and everything goes white. Playing from the eyes of the person who was killed, and making it a playable section is what made it special. The Airport scene wasn’t very emotional because you didn’t know these people and you weren’t seeing things from their eyes. This one wasn’t very emotional as it’s happening again to people you aren’t familiar with, and the closest you get to experiencing what it was like was from a video recorder. It’s not as emotionally gripping or powerful, and is just starting to become as subtle as a brick to the face. Or maybe I’m a jaded bastard who rambles incoherently about video games.

jacksoncook a year agothis is not even close to as crazy as the airport scene in modern warfare 2, or even the nuke in modern warfare 1. its still pretty crazy though.
