The story behind the song "Life's Been Good"
Life's Been Good is a song written by Reginald Headen aka Gemstar of Dubplanet Records.This song and video was inspired by the life of a patient that Gemstar took care of at his day job as a CNA in the Level 2 Trauma Center hospital where he works.
Derick Vassar at tender age 34 was shot in the back on November 16th 2012. The bullet entered his back,went through his left lung just missing his heart,fractured his 8th rib and the bullet bounced back into his spine around the T6 region causing him to be paralyzed from the waist down.
Gemstar became close with Derick during this tragic time in his life and tried his best to keep Derick's spirits up during his hospital stay. Music plays a big role in Gemstar's life out of the hospital so he began to discuss his favorite artist and bands with Derick and played some of his newer uplifting track he had recorded for Derick to hear. Gemstar met Derick's fiance and daughter and gave them all cds to listen to and exchanged phone numbers and emails to keep in contact thru facebook when Derick went to rehab.
There was a special song that Gemstar wrote and wanted to use one of his patients who passed away R.I.P Mikail Dowdey earlier in 2012 at age 27 from a horrible car accident. Gemstar was never able to shoot the footage with Mikail's untimely death. While bonding and growing a friendship with Gemstar, Derick agreed to film his everyday life after being shot and paralyzed for Gemstar's song ''Life's Been Good''. Derick was blessed not to lose his life after being shot altho he is paralyzed he is still able to be in his wife and daughter's life and is very thankful.
