A lot of people only go hiking when they go on a camping trip or only a handful of times a year. Douglas Duroste French hikes a lot more than that. He likes to stay in shape and uses hiking as a way to test his endurance and strength. He also enjoys the outdoors, so the time spent outside hiking is also time that helps him relieve stress from everyday life. Since he was little, he has been going hiking on the trails and in the parks around his town or on different campgrounds.
Douglas Duroste French thinks you can learn a lot about life from hiking. A good hiking trail teaches you the most. Hiking is a lot like life for a few reasons. First of all, you need to make sure you have the right equipment and skills applicable to the trail before you get started. Same thing applies when you are starting a new job or a new project. If you don’t have the right equipment or skills, you are setting yourself up for failure.
Then once you are on the trail hiking your way along, you have to know what your goal is. If you don’t have a goal, say a waterfall or a great mountain or hilltop view, you can easily be discouraged going through the rough spots on the trail. Setting off on a new project or job in life can be equally as discouraging if you don’t have a goal as well. Douglas Duroste French finds this the most interesting part of hiking. No matter what rough areas you run into, if you are determined to reach your goal, you will make it. At the end you are rewarded with whatever the trail has to offer those who make it to the top. It’s a great feeling of accomplishment, almost a microcosm of accomplishing something in life. The hardest things to do are usually the most rewarding.
