why? the person can always remove the cochlear implant later if they want to be a part of deaf culture. in the meantime, giving your child the best advantage for the future by developing neural pathways for hearing is not a bad idea. without the cochlear implant, those neural pathways would not develop or would not be as fully developed if implanted later in life. also hearing with a cochlear implant at a young age helps the child develop better oral communication an avoid the stigma of “deaf speech” as well as develop better phonological awareness and reading skills. Without sufficient support and intervention, many deaf individuals unfortunately only achieve the reading skill level of most fifth graders.
