primavolta 5 months agothese are not really that difficult. I’ve been studying Spanish off and on for a few years now, and I’m drowing in present, preterite, imperfect, present perfect, subjunctive, gerundio, etc etc… as well as irregular verbs. Some I’m sure I’ll never remember unless I end up fully immersed in a Spanish speaking environment for a long time.

deaddrift 5 months agoWell, it rhymes… but any discussion of the absurdity of the English language is incomplete without mentioning that there are FIVE DIFFERENT WAYS to pronounce ‘ough’. Cough, dough, bough, rough, through. Yikes. And ‘flammable’ and ‘inflammable’ mean the same thing. English is fucked. QED.

I know several languages, English was by far the easiest to learn. The grammar must be the simplest in the world: no genders and no cases! The most difficult language I know is Polish, that language has three genders and seven cases, it’s an inflection nightmare and it’s also hella difficult to pronounce. The only moderately difficult sound in English is the “th”. All languages have some quirky spellings and declinations for some words, that’s not what makes a language difficult. Finnish has 15 cases, several plurals, it’s agglutinative, I can’t even imagine… The only “logical” languages are the ones that are constructed, like Esperanto

UBM 5 months agoBelieve me even in my native language german, even though I have no problem using our 3 pronounce for every single thing, still today I have NO clue what the rules are for it. Why would a knife be neutral, a fork female and a spoon male? LOL I guess every language has its’ strange rules.
