Scholastic Books Sends Girls Misogynistic Message

Survive Anything! series sure thinks boys and girls need different life skills. Boys get to survive shark attacks while girls get to “survive” teaching their cat to sit.

I know, right? Now tell your friends!

Special thanks to Jackie Parker over at Interactive Reader for reading this nonsense so we don’t have to.

There are a lot of times when childhood is broken down into boys vs. girls. Sometimes that’s a good thing, like when teaching pre-teens about what the crap is up with their changing anatomy.

And sometimes it’s a bad thing, like when you assume boys want to be action heroes and girls want to be useless princesses.

The girl version should, in theory, be just as useful and action oriented right?

What the hell did I just read? Did I time travel to 1950? Nope, I’m still writing this article on my computer in the year 2012. How did this dreck get published?

The worst part is even the “girl” chapters that seem to veer into actual survival situations are a smoke screen. Scary Survival in Chapter 8 covers crucial things like not throwing things at a ghost because you’ll piss it off. Surviving a camping trip includes life-saving “fresh air is good for your complexion” tips. Live through a day at the beach by tying your hair back and not wearing heels. It honestly wouldn’t surprise me if zombie survival in Chapter 26 entirely consisted of “find a man”.

These books are written for kids aged 8+ which seems kind of young to instill the systematic delineation of appropriate gender activities. But what do I know? I only have a 7 year old. Maybe by next year I’ll want her to know the best way to teach her cat to sit instead of how to keep calm with a broken leg.

I reached out to Scholastic Books for comment and they referred me to a press release posted to their blog today:

Many readers have expressed concerns about our How to Survive Anything titles, and we want to thank you for your passionate responses. The two titles have had very limited distribution to date, and no further copies will be made available.

Please check out the many other titles kids can discover this summer on our summer reading booklists, available on our Summer Challenge page and our Pinterest boards.

Again, we thank you for your feedback.

While they aren’t going to pull the books from shelves, they assert no more copies will be published.

i really don’t understand how surviving a t-rex attack is a problem…for anyone…let alone gives way to gender specification.

I see a flipside to the argument that this book series encourages males to take the more aggressive ideal and females to go for the soft, feminine ideal. I can see these books actively suggesting that women are the more risk-averse (some would say “smarter”) while men are more risk-taking (i.e., retarded). For instance, the books for girls seem to deal primarily with boring yet realistic problems that normally occur in everyday life. Except for the zombie invasion which I’m sure is more about an crazy ex showing up at the same party as you. The book for boys, however, deals with wild, outlandish scenarios that could not possibly occur unless the reader had done something foolish? Broke your leg? Your fault. Facing down a polar bear? If the polar bear has already seen you, you’re dead. Just lay down and hope the first swipe from it’s six-inch claws gives you a swift death. Want to survive a T-Rex attack? WHY IN THE HELL WOULD YOU TRAVEL TO A TIME PERIOD WHEN CARNIVORES THE SIZE OF A CITY BUS EXISTED IN THE FIRST PLACE? Because, apparently, boys are stupid.

The boy’s book has a chapter about surviving a vampire attack. These books are entertainment, not for practical use. They’re simply written based off of what they think the demographic would enjoy reading more.

More feminist whining. What are you going to do when you have to face some really tough challenges. Let’s drop the myth that women are always victims, especially white women who seem to complain the most these days. How about talking about the sexist draft that requires only 18 males to register for their possible destruction? Feminists have a tendency to overlook gender privilege when it lets women off the hook.

I’m so tired of buzzfeed turning into Jezebel.com  These books are stupid and wrong because they assume boys only like pissing off animals and reading unrealistic stuff and that women never get into dangerous situations and only have to deal with normal things NOT BECAUSE THEY HATE WOMEN.  How has both sexs being stereotyped wrongly turned into being “misogynistic”. These books have stereotype issue theyre not promoting one sex over the other.  Or is it alright that they’re saying being rich, playing sports, having friends, being a mind reader, manipulating and everything else on that list are things only girls can do? Boys on the other hand most go and try and kill them selves going after polar bears  If you have a problem with them just buy both fucking books or don’t buy the books at all.

I just see this as evidence that girls tend not to do stupid things, like provoke animals in their habitats or be unprepared when being outdoors. Though the “teach your cat to sit” is just dumb.

    • doctor spaceman 11 months ago

yes, schoolastic should print 1000s of books about doing ‘yucky boy stuff’ for girls.
I talked to a friend’s daughter, asking her if she likes lego, robots, etc. she didn’t. she likes pink, and princesses.
my nephew on the other hand, loves transformers, death, and dinosaurs.

The chapters about apologizing and keeping secrets will serve young women well if they need to survive spousal abuse later in life.

This is Danelle Ballengee, a champion “adventure racer” with skills in trail running, mountain biking, paddling, climbing, rollerblading and mountaineering. Danelle once climbed all 53 of Colorado’s 14,000ft peaks in under 15 days. She won 103 snowshoe races in 11 years.  In 2006, she fell down a rock face the equivalent of a two-storey building, shattering her pelvis on impact. Her legs were detached from her upper body and she was bleeding internally. She dragged herself over rocky terrain to find a puddle of water that sustained her for 3 days and two freezing nights in he wilderness: it took her 5 agonising hours to travel that quarter mile. Her dog Taz saved her life by leading rescuers to her, and against the odds, Danelle made a full recovery. Reached for a comment, she said “If it hadn’t been for the chapter on How to Survive a Fashion Disaster, I wouldn’t have made it.”

Sure, let’s just mix boys and girls in one big survival book. While we’re at it, why don’t we just add Chinese kids in there too? This country…

WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK HELL GODDAMN *WHAT*?! Why not just make ONE great book with really cool survival tips? Include pictures of both boys and girls being competent, to teach both genders that anyone can be savvy in an emergency?  I just can’t even.

    • sutterh 11 months ago

I for one am disappointed that we continue to instill upon America’s youth the idea that zombie survival is a legitimate skill.

    • Emily G. 11 months ago

Technically this is adhering to gender role assignment, which is still pretty wrong. Especially since it’s natural for kids to experiment with gender roles for a while. I am offended at the major separation of gender roles with these books, regardless of how common or uncommon the scenarios are, this still proves that society has a ways to go in gender equality if we’re still trying to teach these positions at such a young age

    • shalalalalauooo 11 months ago

      That press release means nothing.
Since the books were not selling well, they had no reason to make a second edition, anyway.

    • Villain 11 months ago

Feel free to jump all over me, but it at least seems like the girls versions have actual real life scenarios…where the boys version are random action flicks that may never happen. 20. How to Survive a Vampire Attack Seriously when will that ever happen…Many scientific reports say girls read more than boys, so give the girls real life advice, and give the boys random attacks and explosions so they may be interested in reading it.
