2. Codename: Thomas
Thomas: has grown up without a father’s influence. Without the model of being a man, he doesn’t have the strongest sense of himself. Despite this he smart, capable and shows courage when it is needed. He can appreciate the absurdities in life and understands you can’t take life too seriously.
3. Who Could It Be?
4. Young Lando Calrissian
Assuming JJ Abrams chooses to tweak over thirty years of expanded universe lore instead of throwing it out the airlock, Lando’s personality lends itself to a childhood without a father. By the time he reached Cloud City, Calrissian had rewritten his own history so frequently even the Empire couldn’t fully separate fact from fiction. His take on life is very blasé but he’s shown courage if the occasion calls for it.
5. Young Han Solo
Prior to signing up with the Republic, Han Solo was an orphan who started life as a conscripted pirate, rose to become one of the best pilots to graduate from the Imperial Academy only to give up his promising military career in the Empire to aid enslaved Wookiees. He definitely fits the bill for a man who appreciates the absurdity in life with fitful bursts of heroism.
6. Jacen Solo
Son of Han and Leia Solo and twin brother to Jaina Solo, Jacen seems the most obvious choice. His character arc lends itself to a movie trilogy, he’s chronologically in the right place, and his parents constant movement for both Galactic Senate business and flight from would-be assassins lends itself to a childhood without a strong father figure.
Plus, Thomas means “twin” in Greek.
7. Codename: Rachel
Rachel: quite young when she lost her parents. With no other family, she was forced to make her way in a tough, dangerous town. Now 17 she has become street smart and strong. She is able to take care of herself using humor and guts to get by. Always a survivor, never a victim, she remains hopeful that she can move away from this harsh existence to a better life. She is always thinking of what she can do to move ahead.
8. Who Could It Be?
9. Bria Tharen
In the original lore, Han Solo’s first love was the daughter of wealthy Corellians who sold all her worldly possessions at the age of seventeen to pursue a life contrary to her family’s wishes. It wouldn’t be much of a stretch to change her from a bleeding heart socialite to a street-wise orphan. Or even to have her be lying about her past, Princess Jasmine style.
10. Mara Jade Skywalker
Former Hand of Emperor and wife of Luke Skywalker, Mara Jade is one of the most iconic expanded universe characters. While currently Jade’s childhood consisted of being taken under Palpatine’s wing for training to be an assassin by the age of fourteen, it would not be inconsistent for her to be undercover as an orphaned teen. And if we’re reading things into the code names, Rachel and Mara are both of Hebrew origin, with Biblical Rachel being mother to Benjamin…which happens to be the name Mara and Luke’s son.
11. Tenel Ka Djo
The daughter of royalty and a trainee at Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Academy, Tenel is the love interest and later wife of Jacen Solo. If Abrams was looking to set up the over-arcing trajectory of Jacen’s life, it would be a bit of a stretch but worse character reassignments have been done in the name of a streamlined plot.
