      I wanted to repost this in the main response section because richards25 is making a common mistake, below. I have a pet peeve about the “too unlikely” objection to evolution, because so many smart people that really ought to know better seem to keep bringing it up.  (Sorry about the tl;dr-ness. I tried to be concise.) The only problem with this theory—and it’s a show-stopper—is that AFTER any event has ALREADY OCCURRED, the odds are 100% that it happened that way. Before the lottery numbers are pulled, everyone has a 1/40 million chance to win. Afterwards, one person has a 100% chance that they have won, and everyone else has a 100% chance of not having won. The odds, and all the alternate decision tree universes, collapse. If you try to predict the exact sequence of results from flipping a coin 100 times, before you start the trial, you’ll have only a 1 in 2^100 chance of picking the right result; i.e., it’s too way unlikely and you’ll never be able to do it. If, however, you go back and read the sequence that actually did occur, then it doesn’t matter that the odds were only 1 in 2^100 to get that result… that just happens to be the result you got. So too with the universe. The likelihood of it happening has nothing to do with it. Many intelligent people do not understand this idea, so don’t feel bad if it seems counterintuitive. It’s just how chance ends up working out. And it necessarily works this way because time moves in only one direction. (/end rant)
