9 L.A. City Officials Step It Up With Support For The NOH8 Campaign
Speaking out against Prop 8 in California, L.A. mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and eight other city officials strike a pose for the “NO H8” campaign.
“If we truly believe in family values, we should value all families. I have supported marriage equality since 1994, opposed and fought Proposition 8, and I am proud to serve as Chair of the first national convention - Democrat or Republican - to adopt marriage equality as part of the party platform. It is a privilege to join with NOH8 in their national campaign to fight bigotry and raise awareness about LGBT equality. Changing hearts and minds is a crucial step on the path toward full civil rights for the LGBT community.”
“I’m directly affected, because I was able to get married in that precious window in 2008,” City Clerk June Lagmay said, referring to the brief period between June 16, 2008 when marriage licenses were issued to same-sex couples following a California Supreme Court Ruling that overturned the state’s same-sex marriage ban, and November 5th, after voters approved a constitutional amendment enshrining the ban in the state’s constitution. Lagmay and her partner have been together for 40 years.
