    • Yes, but Samuel Wilson was the inspiration for the name “Uncle Sam” because of the stamps on the barrels of meat he provided to the US Army during the War of 1812. The barrels were stamped “U.S.” which was jokingly said to stand for “Uncle Sam.” The image based on the Lord Kitchener poster came much later. (Sam Wilson is actually an ancestor of mine, so the whole Uncle Sam thing is a bit of fun family history for me)
