    Maybe he didn’t knowingly want to be rescued, sure, but that doesn’t mean he was beyond help - and it’s in everyone’s best interest to be vigilant. I certainly wouldn’t expect his classmates to rehabilitate him - they wouldn’t even have to go out of their way to “be nice” to him - though not bullying is always a good baseline.  He may have been irredeemably psychopathic or sociopathic. Or he may have been one of those very troubled kids who kept flashing neon *HELP ME* signs (like using “suicidal smile” as a nickname, for example), and nobody did anything.  There’s a place in England called Mulberry Bush School where they’re doing incredible things for troubled children. It really is possible to rescue kids before it’s too late. (I highly recommend reading the article I just linked - it’s very encouraging.)
