U.S. House Passes Bill Requiring ISPs To Track All Online Activities
The House of Representatives yesterday passed an extremely disturbing bill that everyone needs to know about. The bill, H.R. 1981 requires your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to track and record for 12 months all your online activities such as what web sites you visit and what content you post online. Read the full story and find out what you can do to help prevent this bill from becoming law here.

iamerickson a year agoHere’s why it’s dangerous (even if you AREN’T doing anything wrong): because if I’m a scumbag blackhat and I hack into some server and commit a laundry list of crimes, the first thing I’m now going to do is open the web server log and change my IPs to that of some random schmuck. If that random schmuck happens to be you, good luck convincing a federal jury that you don’t deserve to go to prison. Still sound harmless?

AdventureNeckbeard a year agoConspiracy theory unite! This is a scheme to target millions of Americans, record what they do online then market items to them according to their activities so they can spend more money. Online advertising trackers aren’t working properly. EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED! /sarcasm.

Ariel R. a year agoWhere in the text of HR 1981: the Protecting Children from Internet Pornographers Act of 2011, does it mention anything about requiring ISPs to track internet activity without the issuance of a subpoena? Additionally, this bill has not yet been sent to the house floor for a final vote, it has only been referred to subcommittee. Text of Bill:

ModernCowboy13 a year agoOk I’m going to admit I’m not great at understanding all of this (I’m only 18 so trying to learn more about politics) but to the people saying that they have nothing to hide so what’s it matter, well I think it matters because speaking for myself at least don’t want the government being in my business even if I don’t have anything to hide it’s an invasion ofnprivacy and free will which makes America so unique and yes it may help catch a few criminals but (crazy is a man who would sacrifice freedom for even a ounce of security)

krissyseniorg a year agoWhy worry about it, if you arent doing anything bad? Do you think they’re going to call you to court for looking at porn, or if your just looking at stupid shit on the internet like buzzfeed or cracked that make you laugh? No probably not. You should probably be thankful they’re looking out for people that are making car bombs or looking at kiddie porn. Just saying. (And believe it or not I’m still liberal)

Aaron Murray a year agoCould someone please quote the section of the bill that requires ISPs to collect 12 months of online activity? I can only find a section that requires ISPs to maintain a list of IP addresses associated with each account for 18 months.

Vito a year agoSmokey B: “Will also force IP providers to keep the names, addresses, phone numbers, credit card numbers, bank account numbers and temporarily-assigned IP addresses of everyone on the Internet on file for a full year.” Where in the bill does it say that? Besides the temporary network addresses. If you can show me in the bill where it says anything close to that, I promise ill click through. You say you have been following the bill for a long time.

Smokey B a year agoI’ve read it and followed the debate. The bill is mislabeled. It may be about child pornography but it IS ALSO about creating an accessible database of internet usage. As it is written now that database may be accessed for many of other purposes beside prosecuting child pornographers. Clicking that link isn’t “blindly following” as there’s more information there. And, yes, the government collecting information about your activities without any reasonable cause to believe you are engaged in criminal activity is a step closer to fascism.

christinabyrons a year agoYes click on the link without reading the bill. Because child pornography and laws enacted to punish those who engage in it is fascism. Shame on you Buzzfeed for not even posting the bill’s title.

Smokey B a year agoJust to be clear, the House Judiciary Committee passed the bill. It still must pass on the House floor and than the Senate floor. This bill, if passed by Congress and signed into law by the President, will also force IP providers to keep the names, addresses, phone numbers, credit card numbers, bank account numbers and temporarily-assigned IP addresses of everyone on the Internet on file for a full year. Click the link and take 20 seconds to help prevent it from passing.
