melissam51 4 months agoI would really, really like to know how these things are happening. I think that you’re right - they’re all awesome. But with only a couple of exceptions (things from Holy Molecules Batman), there are no explanations. I’d have loved to at least have links I could follow to learn more. It would be nice to see evidence that the writer of the article did more than google “Cool science gifs”.

ohmygoditsamonkey 4 months agoYou’re not wrong! The chemical substance in the gif is sodium polyacrylate - a sodium salt, and a super-absorbent polymer (hence its ability to absorb 2-3 hundred times its mass in water.) It’s used to make fake snow and is as tofuttiklein said, put in diapers to soak up moisture. :)
