pandorasmailbox 4 months ago#6 isn’t exactly “dumb”: Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t practice Thanksgiving, along with a number of other holidays. While I doubt that was the OP’s intent, making fun of them for posting it reveals more about your ignorance than theirs.

No religion celebrates Thanksgiving. Its a national holiday. Like Fourth of July or Memorial Day. Talk about revealing your own ignorance. lol

I never implied that Thanksgiving is a religious holiday. Typically, and as I already stated, Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t celebrate ANY holidays, religious or secular, because they’re encouraged to maintain political and national neutrality. Most “holidays” as typically celebrated by Western culture have either pagan or nationalistic roots, both of which are discouraged by the doctrine of The Watchtower. We can rephrase the OP’s question as, “is there a religion that doesn’t celebrate Thanksgiving?”. In which case, the answer is “yes”: Jehovah’s Witnesses. Again, I doubt that OP was thinking that far ahead, and was assuming that Thanksgiving was a religious holiday, but really and truly, there is a degree of sense behind it. (As opposed to someone marvelling at the fact that the “W” has disappeared from the racquet’s shadow in the first picture.) Really, you could replace “Thanksgiving” with just about any holiday, and it would still sound ridiculous, but the answer would be the same almost every time, because Jehovah’s Witnesses only recognize one holiday, and it’s a holiday exclusive to themselves: The Memorial of Christ’s Death (and no, I don’t mean Easter. It’s a separate celebration entirely.) Sorry about the mega-ramble, but I find religions and social studies to be remarkably fascinating. I would recommend that someone as bold as to label themselves as AtheistPilgrim do a bit of research on the religions they eschew before tossing about the label of ignorance, though. It could save yourself from receiving boring and long-winded replies such as this one. ;)

jennyc77 4 months agoI really, really hope these people were making a joke.. If they are actually being serious, how in the hell do these people go through life not “wondering” and having any “deep thoughts” about the past?? They never stopped to think about where BC comes from?? Have they ever even heard of the term BC?? I don’t understand how people can be happy going through life just wallowing in ignorance. It boggles my mind.

petera10 4 months ago#6 In fairness… Thankgiving was originally a religious holiday that grew out of traditional pagan harvest festivals… It is celebrated as a religious feast day in Christian religions, so this isn’t really an ignorant question. It actually shows the ignorance of the person who selected it in believing that Thanksgiving was only a secular holiday.

I wouldn’t say it grew out of pagan harvest festivals, exactly. Pretty much every religion and culture had harvest festivals, not just pagans. Sukkot is a Jewish harvest festival, for example. But since Thanksgiving in the US has been an official NATIONAL holiday for well over a hundred years, it is still pretty dumb to ask if every religion celebrates it. It’s like asking if every religion celebrates Independence Day. It’s not ignorant to believe it’s a secular holiday—Thanksgiving, as we know it, is a completely secular national holiday.

I actually can’t even think of a way that one would be intentional. There’s nothing funny about pointing out that…um…that elevators have buttons to go to every floor, like they’re supposed to. I’m pretty sure they just don’t realize it’s the same elevator no matter what floor you get in on. Some may very well be jokes, but I can’t see it with that one.

There are some elevators that don’t have buttons (you select your floor from the outside, then it tells you what elevator to get into - those outside panels don’t have a button for your current floor). So I dunno, maybe he going off of something like that? It’s hard to say conclusively without context.
