As a man who is approaching middle age and is from the hella zone, I would like to say that I too thought hella was out of use. Back in the late 70's to the 90's hella was used in almost every sentence. But I hadn't heard it in years…that's hella weird. PS I hated it when people started using hella, hella wrong in the 90's.

I live in Eureka, in Humboldt County, CA (extreme north) and NO ONE says that crap around here. Only people who are NOT from Humboldt say “hella”. Then we blow smoke in their faces and laugh at them.

I go to university in NorCal, but I was born and raised in SoCal. It was a very strange feeling the first few months being surrounded by people who said 'hella' all the time. After a while you can't help but say it yourself. It's a very catchy word.

Hella is a hella good word. Versatile and it pisses people off who don't like it. Especially here in what is apparently the 'Hella' green zone. But it's dying. (Frankly I thought it was already dead in non-ironic usage until I heard it this weekend at my friendly neighborhood National Park.) And for those not in the know “Hella” is best understood as a shortened form of “helluva” or “helluva lot” but not directly replacable in it's usage. Ex: “Dude, Michelle got hella wasted last night.” It's basically what all the cool kids were saying five years ago. But it still lingers, perhaps with a touch of hipsterific irony to it at this point.

You lose “wicked” and I'll lose “hella,” weirdo.

What's “hella?” Is it like “hello?”
