11 Canadian TV Dramas That Americans Should Absolutely Be Watching

1. Murdoch Mysteries

CBC

Murdoch Mysteries is set in late 19th/early 20th century Toronto and follows a detective who is way ahead of his time. Following a similar format as a traditional police procedural, Detective Murdoch solves a crime every episode with the help of two female — which would be slightly extraordinary for the time period — medical examiners, Constable Crabtree, and the slightly brusque Inspector Brackenreid. The 9th season will premiere this fall.

2. Bitten

Space

If you're still looking to fill the supernatural void left by the end of True Blood, Bitten might just be the answer. A female werewolf tries to balance "normal" life with werewolf responsibilities and chaos generally ensues. The series has been renewed for a third season.

3. 19-2

Bravo

19-2 is a police drama centred around two Montreal officers, a rookie and a veteran. A french version previously aired on Radio-Canada. The acting is superb and 19-2 has been hailed for its camera work.

The show has been renewed for a third season but its release date hasn't yet been announced.

4. Between

Netflix

If you like to be kept guessing, tune in to Between — A sci-fi thriller about a small town inflicted with a mysterious illness that kills everyone over 21 years of age. Also, if you're having a quarter-life crisis this show will give you just one more reason to feel old at 25. It's in its first season.

5. Motive

CTV

A police procedural set in Vancouver, BC, Motive tells the story of Detective Angie Flynn who searches for the answers behind local murders. Season 4 is in the works but a release date has not been set.

6. X Company

CBC

This WWII spy-thriller is a Canadian/Hungarian collaboration. Five Canadian secret agents embark on missions in Europe at the centre of the Second World War. An ambitious period piece, X Company has received strong reviews and CBC has ordered a second season—set to air in winter 2016.

7. Saving Hope

CTV

If you're a Grey's Anatomy fan, look to Saving Hope for your next dose of doctor-drama. Doctors in a Toronto hospital deal with life-threatening situations AND the supernatural. Yup, you read that right. So it's basically a supernatural hospital drama series and absolutely worth your attention.

8. Rookie Blue

Global

Rookie Blue is a cop drama set in Toronto. American viewers have already had the chance to get into the show, as it airs on the ABC network in the States. The storyline follows — you guessed it — rookie cops as they negotiate life's drama and the demands of their jobs. It's been likened to the "Grey's Anatomy of cop dramas," so you know that it will totally pull you in and keep you watching. Season 6 is currently underway.

9. Orphan Black

Space

Americans might already be familiar with this award-winning Canadian science-fiction series. If you aren't watching, you should be. The premise, following the lives of clones—all played by the uber-talented Tatiana Maslany—is as original as it is engrossing. There are currently 3 seasons with a 4th ordered for 2016.

10. Heartland

CBC

A long-running drama on CBC, Heartland follows the lives of two sisters living on a horse ranch in Alberta. They face loss, adversity, and the task of saving injured and neglected horses. Season 9 is currently in production and will probably air in fall 2015.

11. And Continuum

Showcase

Another science-fiction offering, Continuum is the story of a group of rebels and the cop who hopes to thwart them. The twist is they've all been sent back in time from 2077 to 2012. Stuck in the Vancouver of 2012, police officer Kiera Cameron must try to stop the rebels from continuing their destructive plans. Showcase will air the fourth and final season of Continuum with a premiere date of September 4th, 2015.
