A child dies, somewhere in the world, every three seconds. Today is United Nations Universal Children’s Day.
From the U.N. press note:
The reasons for this tragedy are diverse; hunger, malnutrition, dirty water or the absence of vaccine protection. Every single one of these problems can weaken the immune system so much that avoidable diseases lead to life-threatening danger. International Children’s Fund helps those children in need, especially in Africa.
The Wuppertaler Kurrende boys’ choir performs Tears For Fears’ “Mad World,” an appropriately depressing song, particularly this line:
“And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad, the dreams in which I’m dying, are the best I’ve ever had…”

Lisa H. 5 months agoThe opera Dialogues of the Carmelites has a similar ending. It reenacts the deaths of 16 Nuns who refused to give up their religion and sang hymns on their way to the guillotine. As each one is killed you hear the sound of the guillotine falling and each Nun goes silent until the last one. In many performances each singer is in their own spotlight which also goes out at the same time.
