"Mad Men" Era Sexist Ad Of The Week #3
“Damn woman! You just CAN’T drive! Give me the keys, and go vacuum my study, Mrs. McCrash.”
Legendary NYC ad agency Doyle Bane Bernbach revolutionized auto advertising with their 1950s-1960s campaign for Volkswagen.
But, this was the Mad Men era. And even DDB wasn’t immune to insulting women. The copy:
Women are soft and gentle, but they hit things…She can jab the hood. Graze the door. Or bump the bumper. It may make you furious but it won’t make you poor.
Hard-drinking men writing hard sell copy that smacked “soft” women.
Glamorous.
