The problem is that the majority of these parents have been phoning it in (as evidenced by their child’s behavior), and then result to these extreme punishments when they’ve reached the end of their rope. These punishments don’t really teach anything except to not get caught, and are more about the parents’ egos than correcting bad behavior in their children. Some of these do constitute abuse, and the rest are just (more) bad parenting. Kids don’t just one day go nuts and break all the rules, it’s a progression, and ignoring it until it’s out of control and then handing out some extreme/abusive punishment isn’t going to help the situation. And for the record, spanking teaches nothing and is a terrible behavior modifier, my parents spanked me, after the age of 5 it was a joke.
