MEMORIES OF A PENITENT HEART charts my investigation into these bits of hearsay and speculation. I start asking questions: What happened between Miguel and his mother in that hospital room? Did he really repent? What motivated my grandmother, the kindest woman I ever knew, to threaten her dying son with damnation? And the biggest question of all… What happened to Robert?

MEMORIES tries to understand the consequences of shame, guilt, and bitterness in these events. An elegy to the uncle I never knew, it is a cautionary tale about missed opportunities, the intricacies of religious belief, and the most quietly insidious forms of bigotry.
