Response to How To Make A Sofia Coppola Movie:
Louis, lots of directors make the same movie over and over again. This is especially true with directors that have enough clout to exert meaningful control over their movies (think Scorsese, Spielberg, Tarantino, Eastwood, Hitchcock, etc.). They change the location, the actors, and the time, but they often hover around the same themes their entire career. Predictably, when they get older they often add mortality to the mix. It’s true, Coppola’s movies have similar themes. That’s not surprising. Her movies are similar because they represent the viewpoint of one specific person. If she was a gun for hire director her viewpoint would probably be much more opaque. My guess is that the problem is that you actively dislike her viewpoint and you are hoping that your dissection of her work will demonstrate that it is ultimately shallow. There’s nothing wrong with that, but let’s not pretend that other directors are any different. Her output has been somewhat uneven, but she has made a number of good movies.
Freedom of Speech doesn’t mean Freedom from Consequences. Conservatives used to champion things personal responsibility.
