This is a wonderful step forward! Having been an underage model in New York, this comes as a welcome change in the industry. However, I find myself a bit skeptical. When all of the legislation for no girls under 16 came through, my agency told me to lie, and I did. Unless representatives from the Department of Labor are actually at fashion industry castings, shoots, and shows, I fear that this will be for nothing. Although, it seems that designers always seem to go with the girls that cause the least trouble. In the past, this has been the young, vulnerable, incredibly thin girls without a developed sense of self. If they are actually faced with the decision to do a mound of paperwork and added expenses or hire a girl over 18, they will likely go with older girls.
