Darsh Patel, 22, was hiking with friends in the woods of the Apshawa Preserve when the 299-pound male black bear approached them, nj.com reported.

The friends separated when they saw the bear. Police later found the bear about 30 feet away from Patel's body, which showed bite and claw wounds.

Residents of the area told nj.com that bears are a common sight. It was the first fatal bear attack in New Jersey in at least 150 years.
