They are a kind of river bug. I’ve seen these myself over rivers around Derbyshire and joked that they could be the origin of fairy mythology. Their back legs hang down as they enjoy themselves over water. I’ve seen them close and they are larger than midges and smaller than the flying daddy longlegs insects but definitely six legged insects. They just look coolly faelike in wooded light over water.
