Dan Savage Debates National Organization For Marriage Chief
What happens when the head of one of the leading groups fighting to stop same-sex couples from marrying sits down with an acerbic sex columnist-turned-It Gets Better self-esteem booster?
The Stranger’s Dan Savage got an invite from the National Organization for Marriage’s Brian Brown to debate LGBT issues and Christianity. Savage took him up on the offer, hosting Brown at his home for a “dinner-table debate” moderated by The New York Times’s Mark Oppenheimer, who writes the “Beliefs” column at the Times.

Matt U. 8 months agoBrian Brown says, “You’re wrong.”
Okay then tell us why. He barely gives any evidence.
“An apple is always an apple. You can’t change that.” True, but you can change the definition of a word to allow others equal rights.
And I don’t remember being taught in school that marriage was defined as one man and one woman. That’s just something you learn in life. -

tadzio148 8 months agoVery, very interesting. Of course, every one of Brian Brown’s arguments in defense of opposite sex marriage could have been used to defend miscegenation laws. At the time of the Supreme Court’s decision in Loving v. Virginia, thirty states banned inter-racial marriages and (according to Gallup) close to eighty percent of the American people thought that was a good idea. So, really the traditional definition of marriage in the United States has been the union of one man and one woman *of the same race*.
