Ann Romney Won’t Talk About Lesbians’ "Hot-Button" Marriages

Pressed in Iowa, the Republican nominee’s wife said “those are hot-button issues that distract from what the real voting issue is going to be at this election.”

Ann Romney repeatedly refused to talk about her views on whether “a lesbian mother should be allowed to marry her partner” in a confrontational interview in Iowa Friday, saying she would ” let my husband speak on issues.”

In an interview today with KWQC’s David Nelson, Mrs. Romney also refused to answer questions about her views regarding availability of birth control insurance coverage.

Mitt Romney opposes same-sex couples’ right to marry and supports a Constitutional amendment to ban those marriages. In the interview, Ann Romney went on to tell the Quad Cities — in Iowa and Illinois — station anchor that the topic is a “hot-button issue” that “distract[s] from what the real voting issue is going to be at this election,” which she said was the economy and jobs.

Though she declined to answer questions about lesbians’ marriages, she talked repeatedly about her own marriage to the Republican presidential nominee, saying at one point, “I’m here to really just talk about my husband and what kind of husband and father he is.”

Later, Nelson went at it again:

David Nelson: You just told a reporter who was questioning you in Cleveland that you want women to have a secure and stable future. I asked you about marriage and whether lesbian mothers should be allowed to marry. Isn’t marriage a part of creating a stable future?”

Ann Romney: “You know, again, I’m going to talk to you about the economy and about job creation and about how my husband is the right person for the right time. This is going to be an election that is very important for women, and we are going to make sure that their economic prosperity is more certain under a President Romney.”
