I’ve never witnessed such a knowledge deficit as when I seek to speak to anyone about teachers. Often I hear how lazy or overpaid teachers are. Are you kidding?! I have never seen a profession that devalues experience as I have in the new structures set up around teachers. In what other profession does a supervisor advise an experienced staff member to learn from novice workers? This is what’s happening to experienced teachers today. Experience and expertise take a backseat to novice, cheap, newcomers. Can you imagine telling an experienced doctored to learn from an intern, or an experienced police officer to take hints from a cadet? It’s ludicrous, but we (parents) just sit back and watch it happen, because some crooked politician has convinced us that teachers’ unions are evil. It’s a topsy-turvy world we live in when novelty trumps experience and gimmickry tops expertise.
