Yeah, but having boobs doesn’t mean that you automatically gravitate towards cooking and cleaning. There’s a difference between “You’re a girl so you will, in general, have a higher-pitched voice than most men” and “You’re a girl so your favorite color is pink and the only thing you care about is imitating housewife duties!” There is a big distinction between gender in society and gender in biology.
Pretend, for a moment, that the only sorts of toys marketed towards boys were tools, while girls were depicted all of the other things listed above: science kits, dinosaurs, microscopes, robots, circuit boards, nerf guns, guitars, toy cars, etc. This is essentially what the catalogues and marketers are doing: they’re making the assumption (or, worse, the decision) that girls are only interested in toys that reinforce 1950s gender stereotypes. Don’t worry about the girls like me that are pursuing higher education in STEM fields, that would have loved a microscope or a circuit board or a chemistry set. Just give us a doll, that’ll make us happy, right?
Actually brought tears to my eyes. This was exactly what I needed today.
Lesbians too — Naomi and Ruth were described using the same words in ancient hebrew that were used to describe Adam and Eve.
Sofia Vergara, anyone?
