Socrates, considered one of the founders of Western philosophy, was once named the wisest man on earth by the Oracle of Delphi. When Socrates heard that the oracle had made such a comment, he believed that the statement was wrong. Socrates said: “I know one thing: that I know nothing.” How can the smartest man on earth know nothing? I heard this paradoxical wisdom for the first time from my school teacher when I was 14 or 15. It made such an impact on me that I used Socrates’s quote as my learning strategy. To me, “I know nothing” means that you might be a wise person, but still, you know nothing. You can still learn from everything and everyone. One thing that I like better than learning from my mistakes is learning from other people’s mistakes. Over the years, I’ve been blessed to have great mentors, teachers, family, and friends that taught me about life. What you will find below is a list of the most important things I learned from other people and books. Some of the lessons took me a long time to learn—but if I had had to learn these things all by myself, it would have taken me a lot longer. We might learn things quickly, but we often forget them at the same rate—and sometimes we need to remind ourselves of what we’ve learned.
In a very important way, whether you are fully conscious of this or not, you are already very aware of what other people think of you. In fact, your behavior in groups can be largely attributed to how others perceive you.
Heartbreak over someone who doesn't love you - I've learned this multiple times in life. You can't be in love someone who isn't in love with you. Let it go. Being fake - It takes a lot of energy to pretend to be someone you're not. To smile when you're sad. To laugh when the joke isn't funny. Be yourself. Be authentic. Regretting the past - Most of our mistakes turn out to be small ones in the big picture. Ask yourself - will this matter in 10 years? Seriously, let it go. It already happened and you can't change it. Accept it. Learn from it. Move on. Worrying about the future - It doesn't accomplish anything, other than making you feel sick. Focus your energy on creating the future you want. Comparing yourself with others - Other people can be a great source of inspiration and learning for you, but don't fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others. There will always be someone that is richer, more beautiful, more successful, more adventurous, more "in love" and more admired. Such is life. So instead of comparing yourself to them, try to focus on being the best version of yourself possible. Jealousy - If your ex falls in love with someone else, why be jealous? You should be happy for that person for finding happiness. Unnecessary material goods - You'll need some for the basic necessities of life (shelter, clothing etc) but there's a lot of unnecessary extra stuff that can weigh you down. For example, if you have 40 suits, I'm pretty sure you'll need more closet space. If you have 5 cars, you'll need more parking space and more insurance coverage. Ask yourself - do you really need this? If not, donate it so that someone in need can use it!
There is a theory of reincarnation in Hinduism. This is one area where Hinduism faces lots of criticism. True this concept is there but it may not be as people commonly understand it. To understand we need to remember a few things. We start our life with an instinctive worldview. Here we see ourselves as an enjoyer with the world arranged around us. This worldview is known as samara. This view is full of dualities, Good and bad, right and wrong and so on. This dualist worldview gives rise to lots of false concepts like supernatural and afterlife. From this worldview the concept of reincarnation appears superstitious. But what does the theory of reincarnation actually say? That the soul is not lost and it takes a new body after death of the old body. So to judge whether theory of reincarnation is right or wrong one has to understand what soul is. There lies the difficulty. Who can say, what the soul is? Soul can not be understood by one who still has the samsara worldview. So one has to train the mind to realize what really is soul or reincarnation. Hinduism itself says that the Samara worldview is false and one should go out of it to find the truth. So there is a bigger truth than what reincarnation actually appears to be. Hinduism does not tell one to accept the idea of reincarnation. It tells one to find the truth. Hindu scriptures say when you find the truth you are free from samsara. One at that stage, is above birth death and reincarnation. We should not see reincarnation as a chance to continue to carry the individuality of this life to the next life. As far my knowledge goes, Hindu scriptures do not say that. Suppose we say there is no reincarnation what is the alternate theory. We live that can not be denied. One day we die. What happens to our consciousness then? Is it extinguished like a lamp when the oil is finished? A person who find idea of reincarnation unscientific, does he or she find the idea of judgement day rational? It is only one human's idea vs another human's. Modern science gives many theories about consciousness. It sometimes does not treat consciousness as a real entity. It is considered an artifact arising from natural processes. Science sometimes even denies the existence of consciousness apart from brain activities. Do all those who find reincarnation superstitious really understand the implications of those views and can intellectually analyze them? Most of us do not want to go to that depth. For people like us Hinduism provides a world view based on 'reincarnation' and 'karma'. It provides a personal God with whom we can develop a bond of love and lead a happy and prosperous life. Those who find this superstitious can find out the truth beyond this reality. Hinduism provides enough support to the seeker in their journey to find the truth.
You don't need to care about your existence, in a classical way. But philosophy and philosophical thinking are usually best produced through questioning. What is existence? We can look at the dictionary definition ("the fact or state of living or having objective reality"), but that still leaves a hunger for more. What is living? Is it the line between your heart beating, pumping blood, and not? Is it having self defined purpose, maybe a familial role or role in the community? Once you answer the question of "if you are alive", the answer might help you. If you say, yes, I am, then you will begin to notice the fact that people aren't living according to your standard, so are they really living at all? Are you the only one truly living a good and fit life, with good standards? Well then, you are pretty special. You live the way only you can see fit, and do it to the best of your abilities. Only 1 in 7 billion can live exactly the way you do! You are truly special in that you know how to exist best for you. If you aren't around, everyone and everything will be missing out on your way of living, and that would be a tragedy. If you said, no, I am not living, then the question arises: are you existing? Maybe your existential question arises from within; from a lack of purpose in life. Maybe you need to spend less time questioning yourself why, but rather first define what. What am I missing out on? What are my interests, goals, passions, etc.? Who am I attracted to? What do I believe in? And then, after you begin to question this; consider the following: What can I do to be living? That's really a self defined thing. At this point, you can change your life to live the way you see fit, and then question whether you exist. At the end of all this, you can question, am I existing? After questioning all this, here's what I gather: You are special. You, the deep, philosophical question asker, are the only person who can live life how you see fit. Nobody else. No one has the same purpose as you, no one has the exact same interests, you are an individual, truly and wholy. What about when life gets tough? Well, only you can come out of those problems the way that is best for you, create a set of standards to better align yourself in the future, prevent them in your own life through your own intuition. If you didn't exist, all this would be lost, all your individuality, all you morals, values, ideas, and those aren't always valuable because of demand, no, but they are always valuable because of one thing: scarcity. Basically, once you are gone, everything valuable to you will be lost, forever. That is why your existence matters, and is important. Establish what you see is right, and hope other take up where you left off. Have a wonderful life.
