Music Buzz Meet the newest, hippest purveyors of “noise music.” Although such categorization may sound like a torture method straight out of Gitmo, the kids are loving it.
Music Buzz One-upping himself (and Radiohead), Trent Reznor is giving away the brand new Nine Inch Nails album away for free online. You don’t even have the option of paying this time around. Just enter your email address and “The Slip” is yours, free, in a format of your choosing — you can also send the album to your high school friends who really loved NIN back in the day.
Music Buzz A fiery little thing, the self-proclaimed “princess of Harlem” - whose album is slated to drop later this year - is the irresistibly cute and colorful protege of hip hop phenom Pharrell Williams. She’s already choreographed a video for Beyonce, and is allegedly a pioneer of the Chicken Noodle Soup dance. How can you not love this girl? She’s like Kelis with a sense of humor!
Music Buzz Agyness Deyn is launching a music career. She’ll be singing on a single called “Who,” a collaboration with a NYC band called Five o’ Clock Heroes. Who is this band??? They’re kind of like the Strokes if you…no, they’re pretty much like the Strokes, period. Agyness will hopefully channel some much-needed model angst into an otherwise generic sound.
Music Buzz Honda’s adorable robot will conduct Yo-Yo Ma and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in a rendition of “The Impossible Dream.” This only fuels our theory that Yo-Yo Ma is, in fact, a Cylon.
Music Buzz A NYC cable-access show featuring well-curated music videos picks up where MTV left off. Online episodes are now available. If you live in New York, you’ll find comfort in knowing that your precious tax dollars are going towards educating the masses about important life topics like indie rock bands and rediscovering irony. Anyone still unwilling to throw out those tattered VHS tapes of old episodes of 120 Minutes will surely appreciate this show.
Music Buzz The much-loved trip hop trio releases their first album in 10 years. Stream it now on Last.fm. Can it be nostalgic to listen to a new album? Really takes you back to the days of the Clinton Administration! The album comes out on April 29, but the pre-release on Last.fm has drawn a record number of listeners. Update: They’ve now limited the streams on Last.fm to 30 second clips, sadly.
Music Buzz The tenor broke the Metropolitan Opera’s 14-year ban on solo encores after nailing nine high C’s to a thrilled crowd. He hit all the high notes in his encore, too. The last - and only other - guy to get an encore at the Met was somebody named Luciano Pavarotti, in 1994.
Music Buzz Brush off your kente cloth robe and clean up that fade - the hip hop trio is reuniting for the upcoming Rock The Bells tour. Amid economic recession, an ongoing war overseas, and George Bush in the White House, this summer should feel like 1992 all over again!
Music Buzz Weezer’s new album is supposedly a throwback to the essential Blue Album. It won’t be out until June 25th, but the speculated album cover has been floating around the internets. Is it just me or does Rivers Cuomo’s new Western look bear a striking resemblance to Jon Brennan from the second season of the Real World? Gaging by his outfit, the new album will be a cross between the Blue Album and “Boot-Scootin’ Boogie.”
Music Buzz The highly anticipated 3-D video version for Björk’s latest single “Wanderlust” will have its nationwide debut on April 20. How fitting that the video would be released on 4.20. You can now watch the video in all its unbridled 3-D glory here.
Music Buzz The DFA recording project of Brooklyn producer Andrew Butler which notably features Antony Hegarty of Antony and The Johnsons is a collection of disco anthems that has already hit it big in the UK. Combine the operatic stylings of Antony Hegarty and the cheesy synth-bass of early 90s club hits, and you’ve got something that will make the punk kids dance.
Music Buzz People are saying good things about her upcoming album of Tom Waits covers, Anywhere I Lay My Head. While the idea of an actor doing a concept album would usually make us shiver, ScarJo has apparently pulled it off.
Music Buzz A hit in her native Wales, the singer-songwriter has found a smash in her throwback single “Mercy.” Her unique growl draws comparisons to a certain snaggletoothed Brit, so here’s to hoping she turns that publicity into something positive instead of, say, getting caught on tape smoking the crack.
Music Buzz The hipster’s music-bible-site has launched its own music video branch. Remember when MTV showed actual music videos? That means you’re old. Relive your youth by watching a documentary about The Pixies or something.
Music Buzz The R&B chanteuse has skyrocketed to the top of the charts in England with “American Boy,” which features a little-known rapper named Kanye West. Somehow, we want to describe the song as “nu disco.” Instead, we’ll just call it “fun.”
Music Buzz Norah Jones’ secret punk band has a new album coming out on Conor Oberst’s label, Team Love. Now that Norah Jones has got some Grammys under her belt as well as a starring role in a Wong Kar Wai film, she can pretty much do whatever she wants, like start a punk band. On a tangential note, is Conor Oberst turning into the Puff Daddy of emo or something?
Music Buzz The band is holding a remix contest. Radiohead’s contest works like this: Download different parts of the song “Nude” from iTunes, remix it to your heart’s content, upload it and the world will vote for a favorite. Blog reaction is mixed: A) Everyone loves their music, but B) Why should you want to pay 99 cents per track to remix a song you don’t own any rights to? Either way, Radiohead wins!
Music Buzz Sassy French electrodisco artist pulls off outlandish outfits while singing lighthearted dance pop. She’s like the French MIA, except she sings about haute couture instead of war-torn countries.
Music Buzz Mexico is awash in anti-emo riots; skinny kids in jeans with sad faces aren’t safe. We mock, but this is both weird and disturbing: There have been spontaneous attacks across the country on emo kids, who are now trying to organize and defend themselves against the angry mobs.
