This sobering piece about atrocities in Uganda hopes to make Joseph Kony, leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army and the man responsible for extreme atrocities in his home country, the most famous man in America.

Art Vandelay a year agoListen guys i’m all for the cause but is anyone else concerned that with all the free campaign press Kony will be getting during an election year that people might unknowingly think he’s a third party candidate and actually elect him as a write-in? think about it.

cornflowerblue a year agoOh, and Mark Castle, you have no right to look down on those of us that disagree with this “KONY 2012” campaign. You’re just another fauxtivist who doesn’t REALLY care. You’re just patting yourself on the back for thinking you’re really contributing to the cause. You’re a top 50 community contributor on BuzzFeed, but you’ve never bothered to advocate for these children or discuss the monstrosities occurring in Uganda before. In a month you’ll forget about this just like everyone else, and you’ll go back to posting your super concerned and meaningful articles such as “8 Pictures of Obama Eating” and “Sexy Disney Man Meat.”

boopbop a year agoSo this guy is starting a viral campaign that’s “indie” and aimed at the younger generation who normally is very anti-war. But what is this campaign all about? Starting schools in Uganda isn’t going to solve the problem of Kony, the message behind this video is very clearly advocating for war. Do you remember the last war we got into that was about overthrowing a corrupt leader to liberate the people? Really, how is this any different than Iraq or Iran or Syria? This is propaganda at its finest that is targeting the oft-overlooked 20-something demographic. This video is trying to make you feel good about going to war by disguising it as humanitarian aid.

Coco a year agoAnd because Bobby, Laren and I are friends and had been doing this for 5 years, we thought it would be funny to bring back to our friends and family a joke photo. You know, “Haha - they have bazookas in their hands but they’re actually fighting for peace.” - Jason Russell on the now infamous photo of the founders of IC posing with guns and the SPLA. I sincerely hope Kony rots in hell, but when the founders and CEO of a charity attempting to bring peace to a war-torn country want to take a ‘joke photo’ back of them posing with an army riddled with rape and looting, I’m fucking done. And that quote is from their response to the criticisms. Fuck these guys and fuck their organisation.

Donate to reputable charities helping children in Uganda (UNICEF, Red Cross).
Call your representative.
Volunteer.
Educate yourself.
Figure out where Uganda is on a map. Things that don’t help:
Creating a transitory blip fauxtivist-post on your Facebook/Tumblr/Twitter page
Donating to IC.
Supporting military armament of troops in Uganda. -

khadejhiak a year agoAll the criticisms of this video and IC have shown me how pessimistic people are. It’s like they want an excuse to not do anything about this problem! I went and looked at IC’s annual report when I heard about this to find out what my money was going to support. They spend *80%* of donations on their programs (central africa programs + awareness programs + media and film creation + awareness products), and that’s pretty good for a non-profit. Yes, Kony is just one person, and the war won’t end when he is captured, but it WILL show the rest of the LRA that they can’t get away with this stuff. Plus, if Kony is captured, we’re also showing ourselves that we are capable, together, of achieving goals, no matter how big and how far away they are. Even if you don’t want to support IC, at least share the video! Join the bandwagon, make people aware of this insanity, and STOP criticizing people who are trying to make a difference.
