I have no pity for anyone who feels the need to blame others for how their child is raised. Exactly like the mothers who sue YouTube or Jackass/MTv when their dumbass sons inflected themselves with third-degree burns after attempting to reenact some brain dead stunt. If you expect pop-culture to have sole influence over your child then you’re one fucked up individual. Like Billie said, take some interest into what your child is listening too/watching.

the problem with her letter is she didn’t explain *why* she thought his music was garbage. She just raged at him.  His response was appropriate.  Green day still sucks, however

her letter was poorly written and she’s pissed about the lyrics, when she let her kid watch MTV and listen to the radio. really???

Isn’t it nice that he takes the time to respond to his fans?

Billy Joe could’ve handled it better, but he is in a pop-punk band. For that, I think he handled it with aplomb. Let me give it a try: You do not have the right to not be offended.  Free speech means all speech. You don’t like it? Too bad, move along and don’t listen. Them’s your options; Listen or don’t. You can voice your opinion, but know that it DOES. NOT. MATTER. Whether you approve, or find it in good or bad tastes, no one but you cares. And no one should. It’s fine that you think Green Day is “trash” and your child shouldn’t listen to them. However, it’s not fine to write them and tell them. Artists are not responsible for your child’s well being. Spend more time supervising your children, less time writing letters to people you’ll never meet. I don’t think it’s prudish or snooty or pompous behavior. It’s narcissistic and entitled behavior; it’s abhorrently selfish. To think your ideals of decency matters more than the basic human freedoms of another person or “artist” because your “special little boy” might be warped by some words is disgusting. That is to say, trying to deny someone’s basic right to expression because you don’t like what their expressing is WRONG. Stop it. Don’t watch or listen or pay attention to it. Keep calm and carry on. Maybe you’ll find something more suited to your tastes farther down the line. “Censorship, like charity, starts at home. But unlike charity, it should stop there.” (Sorry that was so long. I don’t like censorship.)

I have this problem whenever I feel inspired to voice my opinion about something which I feel needs to be said. It quickly gets labeled with terms not dissimilar to “pompous”, “priggish” , or “prudish”, and the reply I get is almost universally far less constructive and far more mean spirited and hateful. The mother in this case objected to the content of the music. In the reply she received, she was personally labeled as “offensive”, and she was judged as being a person who doesn’t love freedom. Yet there was no evidence to draw that conclusion whatsoever. Not liking Green Day does not a fascist make. Personally I’m a big fan of Green Day. But their right to make music is no more important or respectable than the right of a mother to express her feelings about the value of the music, which she did without impugning the members of the band on a personal level. It doesn’t seem very reasonable for them to assume that everyone should like their music, and if not that they are some kind of offensive, hateful person with a “big mouth”.  I’m sure I’ll get negative replies to this comment too (I almost always do on buzzfeed), but that would pretty much only serve to prove what I’m saying..

I wish Billie had pointed out how the little boy and his dad are apparently bonding over the music together. Mom feels left out of the party!
