Stanford doesn't have a mascot. (We used to be the “Indians,” but that's pretty politically incorrect and was dropped in 1972.) The nickname for Stanford is the Stanford Cardinal. That's cardinal as in the shade of red, not the bird or the Catholic clergy. (Think of it as similar to Alabama's Crimson Tide.) The Stanford Tree is technically part of the band.

And to think that I cheered at Western for Big Red and now coach at UCSC for the Banana Slugs. And have cheered in high school for the Bowling Green High Purples and Coached for the Rapid City Central Cobblers. That would be a shoe guy, not a pie…lol. I think I must hold the record for participation with the weirdest named mascots!!

As it turns out, the name of the Stanford team is the Cardinals, which for some odd reason is referring to the color and not the bird. the tree mascot is just something some band kids decided to put together one day based on the school's seal, which comes from a redwood in Palo alto. I dont think its official or anything

On a simlar note to the Demon Deacon, Washburn University's mascot is the Ichabod, as in Ichabod Crane from Sleepy Hallow.
