Why we do no collections, but only this pair of trousers? Why today`s youth drop their pants and why we have been developing our vision since 2003? Because at some point it must come that obvious needs effect specific products. So we have been mentally in the future and explained a possible effect of the “Baggy” phenomenon. We needed an expression for it because it became a real adventure and strong force that pushed us to realise our ideas… But what is actually innovation in the fashion world? Strauss & Davis took out a patent for gold diggers who needed solid trousers called „Gênes“ manufactured with „Serge de Nîmes“ (studded blue jeans). They were used as a symbol for the liberation from conventions. Some people say, today every style is parallel or garments were already existing, in a world of randomness of collections following the principle of comebacks. But you can find good concepts, brilliant fashion, tremendous talents, creative minds and master craftsmen. But as bloody beginners, we wanted an approximation of a perfect and timless design. Functional properties should be filtered through an evolutionary process, implemented by the principle of “form follows function”. Not only something nice under the aspect of xy, or turning trousers itself upside down. Starting point is that, the quality of the fabric defines the voguish and functional scopes, whether you put a pocket on the side or design whatever, a tight or a loose cut. This means that the terminology or the silhouette of trousers in the western aesthetic is firmly defined and therefore always the same - two long legs - but the essential know-how of a second oriental type, the saourel, harem pants or fisher trousers, etc., is the extremely pleasant comfort. Basically two types of trousers, where one is more traditionally shaped and the other is highly differentiated by e.g. “finishings” or „destroyed looks“. But what does it mean to walk “baggy” along the streets, even in bavarian „Lederhosen“ to the Oktoberfest or in skinny jeans? Yes, those habits can be observed. What should be Streetwear more, than the sympathy for the last decades? Aesthetic barriers are dismantled international and there are rude discussions about the taste of diverse drop crotch and harem pants, although MC Hammer is recommended as pionier. So we just go down in the mass of labels. Our experience in the fashion business is, nobody wants to take a risk, not an innovation or even an unknown label. With our student jobs we financed our “Search for the Ultimate Trousers” and changed our lives subsequently. Please don`t see this as a story of a couple, there is a lot more which has to fit. In many aspects we touched our limits, as we were testing over years, creating our picture and finally suprised our own imagination we had before. We feel grateful for our friends and our luck. But who can understand and recognize that? So the question arises what we are actually doing, or how we could get into that struggle? It began so easy in Sidi Kaouki, in the summer of 2003, in that big wide bay at the atlantic coastline, in magic and mystical Morocco. Ebba and I stayed there for two and half months windsurfting every day. Abdulha, not only a busy business man, always came over to our tent, which you were able to build up direct on the beach and wanted to sell us his bits and bobs….The landscape, the climate, the friendly locals, the sea, the whole mix of influences, something happened there. So after 2 months totally washed by the waves, sanded by the wind and with a few arabic words talking about some things, our eyes stucked focusing on Abdulha`s fine trousers. A pair of blue Tuareg trousers with a traditional embroidery, in an effect of noble and casual. But on repeated requests he didn`t like to break up with them. Of course we understand that, because who would spontaneously sell his own trousers? We had tried in vain, to find such a quality - Well, otherwise, he always wanted to sell everything he had! In Africa, there is plenty of time for thoughts. So these “biped - wrappings” had to be made by ourselves and because Ebba is good in sewing and knitting, she copied the cut of these trousers for a template. So that was the point when it actually started as my custom desires met Ebba`s ideas of design. At that time we did not know that we will go one step after the other and it will mesmerizing us for years and we will work and think for it day after day. Initially we just had no terminology for what`s going on. But these red cactus fruit, a souvenir from another surftrip the year before, gave us a lot of small cacti. One friend celebrated her birthday and so we carried a mini cactus in the subway on the way to the party. Suddently we both felt that like this the present is too impersonal and it felt like scales from the eyes, to give also our trousers this name. geppebba® [dʒepæba:] is a prickly gift from Ebba and Geppetto:)
