“The origin of the name “America” comes from the Welshman Richard Amerike. The reason it doesn’t seem plausible that Amerigo Vespucci is that it if people had places named after them, it would be their surname, rather than their forename that was used. For example, Magellan Straits (Ferdinand Magellan) and Tasmania. (Abel Tasman) (Forfeit: Amerigo Vespucci)”

bobbya2 a year agoDo people actually still believe that two continents are named after a guy that was an observer on some some ships that came to South America years after Columbus hit the West Indies, and centuries after Asiatic and Norse cultures reached North America? The reason people believe this is because some amateur mapmaker from Germany guessed why people were calling it America and assigned Amerigo Vespucci’s name to the origin (in 1507). Pretty flimsy. Templar and subsequently Freemason legends regarding an undiscovered land beneath a star called Merica offer a better supported argument.
